Ex-Jesus / Impregnable split

>> Thursday, December 29, 2011

One of the first releases on the amazing Callow God label run by Jeff Witscher.  This is harsh noise at its most wonderful.  There's no reason to pass this one up.

Black Sand Desert / The Cherry Point - split

>> Wednesday, December 28, 2011

You should definitely know what you're getting with this one.  I love Phil's work but his side on this tape doesn't really do it for me for some reason.  The BSD track rules though.  This one is one of the more obscenely limited Troniks tapes, in an edition of 24.

Stillbirth - self-titled

>> Sunday, December 25, 2011

This appears to be the first release from Luke Moldof, aka Stillbirth, and the second release on the Razors And Medicine label back from 2006.  Very low-key, slothful loops; reminds me a lot of Miles Haney's stuff.  Five untitled tracks.

Peter Brötzmann Octet – Machine Gun (1968)

Here's a piece of free jazz from mid-twentieth century that hits with as much fury as the newest Merzbow release- Machine Gun is exactly how its title describes. You don't have to have an interest in jazz to appreciate what happens here; just a general interest in the bellows of raw musical power.

Hair Stylisics, another project from Masaya Nakahara (Violent Onsen Geisha) put out a series of records starting 2008 each month. Here are a few that I've picked up over time, with additions from Bleak Bliss's blog. What I can say about the albums is the assortment of sounds manipulated is rather awesome and unique from other noise releases. get it!

Navicon Torture Technologies – Pure Skin (2006)

>> Friday, November 11, 2011

The typical reaction for an individual who has never heard of 'noise music,' or for that matter experimental electronic music, is to reject it on the basis of monotony. Power electronics can be even harder to grasp since it's based on repeating squalls of feedback. But there are examples, as with any genre, of artists who transcend those boundaries to create original and fresh work. Such is the case with Lee Bartow's Navicon Torture Technologies, an artist whose work blends the extremes of harshness and beauty of carnal desire in a way that's truly astonishing. Pure Skin is a perfect example of this, making for some truly effecting power electronics that doesn't necessarily follow the characteristics of Whitehouse-esque provocation. A must listen.

Pauline Oliveros - Four Electronic Pieces 1959-1966 (2008)

>> Friday, November 4, 2011

Take a look back into the past of electronic music with Pauline Oliveros, a key figure in electro-acoustics/musique concrete, or what have you. There's four pieces here, each with dense, awesome sounds. I'll admit noise doesn't date like other genres of music do; these tracks are still as fresh and striking now as they must have been decades ago.

Jesus Of Nazareth – The Shame Of Being A Child

>> Wednesday, November 2, 2011

Second release from this US (mostly) extreme Noise / Gabber unit. Beginning with punishing drill n' bass breaks and blastbeats with monstrous psychotic vocals and HARSH noise, "The Shame Of Being A Child" progresses into ghostly drones and white noise. Add in some Merzbow-meets-Boredoms insanity, mashed up grindcore debris, heavy machine beat action underneath swirling drones like ala Troum or Final. Overall, this album falls somewhere around the intersection of Discordance Axis, Muslimgauze, Japanese Noise, Nasenbluten and Winterkälte(!). Highly recommended to avant-grind and heavy noise fans.
I fucking love this release.

Keith Rowe & Toshimaru Nakamura – Weather Sky (2001)

>> Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Noise, I believe, is the end of pathway that a lot of genres extend into. Take, for instance, free improvisation, a form which involves participants playing off of each other with no set rules or regulations. Keith Rowe is from AMM, a band notorious for making some of the most challenging free improv music out there. No, it's not explicitly noise, but aided by Nakamura (who contributes a high pitch tone throughout) the comparisons are certainly there. It may not be the typical dark, sinister noise that you normally see posted here, but it certainly is something gripping, and noise fans will know what I mean. Listen closely, and you'll hear a breadth of unique sounds from this. Truly epic.

Propergol – Un Déchaînement De Violence / Cleanshaven (2006)

>> Wednesday, September 21, 2011

I'm not sure where many noisers stand in the debate of sampling. Indeed, nearly every second Propergol uses another sample to aid ominous, creepy atmospheres of a dark mental hospital or man's inner psychosis. But it's ingenious in it's effect and immersion of the listener's experience, and why you should listen to this right now and get transported into a world of terrible fantasy. This is a 2cd remastering of two previous albums from the PE artist's collection, and deserves to be heard. (search Propergol to find other downloads as well)

Prurient - Mummification And Prayer

>> Monday, September 19, 2011

Another debut as far as I am aware.  This is an hour of work from 2001 spread across two C30s which equals four fifteen minute tracks that seem to be a single consistent piece, possibly recorded live.  It has a definite lo-fi aesthetic about it that is consistent with Prurient releases such as Whooping Cough, Starvation, and Shrimp Crescent.  Doesn't seem to mesh with its packaging "mate", Arbitrary Witness, in any noticeable sound.  A wonderful piece of work, best listened to in its entirety.  Four untitled tracks.

Prurient - We Set Off In High Spirits

As far as I know, this rip can be considered a debut, as I am aware of no other existing rip of this tape.  A 2003 release on Gods Of Tundra in an unknown edition, this C20 seems to be a wonderful bridge between the harsher "History Of Aids" style Prurient and his later melodic works.  A must-download.

Nicole 12 – Black Line (2011)

Much like power-electronic flagship Whitehouse, Nicole 12 devotes its lyricism and attitude to pedophilia in a way that's intended to shock and provoke. This shouldn't be a surprise to fans of PE who already know the drill. This new LP from Nicole 12 more of the pounding distortion, with the addition of creepy vocals and sound bits. One could consider it serious and demented, or perhaps a little overwrought and silly. I'm in both camps. Check it out and see for yourself.

The Gerogerigegege – Singles 1985 -1993 (1994)

>> Wednesday, September 14, 2011

One of the signature Japanoise bands around, Juntaro Yamanouchi takes the cake for being the most bizarre of all the noise-makers, his works involving senzuri (live masturbation) blasts of noise and sheer rock mayhem (like with Tokyo Anal Dynamite) Here's a collection of singles throughout his career from hard to find print releases (though perhaps it's all hard to find, anyway) Heed my warning: there's plenty of noise delight and masturbation to be found on here.

Prurient / Nico Vascellari – Jesus (2010)

In honor of Dominick Fernow aka Prurient's most recent release, which I think most of us would agree is a definite departure from his previous work (not necessarily a bad thing!) here's some of the ear-splitting feedback that we all cherish him for. This is a collaboration with Nico Vascellari, musician and visual artist. Consists of live sets and recorded material. Great stuff.

This is a 2009 lp by Blood Stereo, made up of husband and wife duo Dylan Nyoukis and Karen Constance. Creepy, ominous and colorful ambient/drone/noise received a lot of praise by The Wire and other press. Really, really good stuff. If you haven't had the chance, get it.

Also, if you want more, have a look at ubuweb's sound collection. It has a wealth of recordings available for download from Blood Stereo, not to mention other noise artists. If you're into avant-garde at all, that's a place to bookmark immediately.
